It’s easy for the school to get away with not labeling their prices for products. You’re probably going into these places before or after class and don’t have time to really look at what you’re buying or you’re just so hungry after three classes back to back that you don’t care and you just need that $15 shrimp tempura bowl. I guess my $14,000 in tuition isn’t enough, I need to give them my kidney to eat a bag of hot chips at 10 a.m.

Cumbre Humboldt is a non profit that is dedicated to offering educational and enrichment opportunities for the Latine community across Humboldt county. Their scholarship “Reach Your Stars” will provide ten students with $500. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is Dec. 1 at 11:59 p.m.

A new union is emerging for students who work for California State University campuses, including Cal Poly Humboldt. Now, any student worker that is employed by a CSU has the option of joining the California State University Employees Union.

Students that become members are agreeing to an automatic monthly $16 deduction from their paychecks. CSUEU is also in the collective bargaining phase between student assistants and CSU management.

So far CSUEU has secured: a grievance procedure (to protect workers from unfair discipline), bereavement leave (2 paid, 3 unpaid bereavement days) which is time away from work to grieve the death of a family member, standardized evaluation processes and some amount of paid sick time.

Marisol Cortes-Rincon, a Cal Poly Humboldt archaeology professor died in late May. Cortes-Rincon had been a member of the anthropology department from 2010-2024. On Oct.1 she was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus for her contributions to the university and students. Family, students and faculty praised her and shared a few words in her memory.

Community members started to speak out on social media platforms and at the Arcata City Council meetings in response to the Oct. 8 video of Michael Steelman’s arrest, also known as ‘Big Mike’. Steelman, who was barbecuing on the Arcata Plaza, was arrested, despite the situation being non-emergency. The Arcata city manager shared his perspectives and the public is awaiting a decision on if the body camera footage will be released. As of now, outraged community members will continue to speak at the Arcata City Council meetings.

Cal Poly Humboldt students Amanda Kanaly and Yaire Barboza are able to vote in a presidential election for the first time. Filling out their mail in ballots, the two best friends with slightly different political views felt that it was extremely necessary to vote this year.

“It’s so important to vote because that’s the one biggest power you have as someone living as a citizen in this country, biggest power you have to really influence, not only your life but the life of your loved ones,” Kanaly said.

Las estudiantes de Cal Poly Humboldt, Amanda Kanaly y Yaire Barboza, pueden votar en una elección presidencial por primera vez. Al llenar sus boletas de voto por correo, las dos mejores amigas, con opiniones políticas ligeramente diferentes, sintieron que era sumamente necesario votar este año.

“Es muy importante votar porque es el mayor poder que tienes como ciudadano en este país, el mayor poder que tienes para influir, no solo en tu vida, sino en la vida de tus seres queridos”, dijo Kanaly.
