HSU faculty and staff provide information in Spanish for community and parents

Humboldt State University now has a list of contacts available to Spanish speaking students and their families so that they can call and ask questions they might have.

People can call anyone on the contact list and ask about anything related to the university.

The service is being done on a volunteer basis by several professors and faculty and is part of HSU’s attempt to keep students and their families updated amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This effort is being led by Edelmira Reynoso, Ph.D, the interim executive director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Rosamel Benavides-Garb, Ph.D, the interim dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science.

Reynoso said that the issue of not having information in Spanish available to students and their families was brought to her attention by El Leñador’s advisor, Andrea Juarez. The service first became available around the beginning of March when the school made the decision to move online.

According to Reynoso, people can call anyone on the contact list and ask about anything related to the university.

Reynoso noted that as a Hispanic Serving Institution, it was important for HSU to have this service available. 

“In the same manner that we know that parents or maybe other people are going into the [HSU] website to make sure that they have up to date information for their students,” Reynoso said. “The same thing would be available to those who felt more comfortable reading that in Spanish.”
