Annual Josiah Lawson in person coat drive changed

A modified David Josiah Lawson winter coat drive distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Charmaine Lawson is the main organizer and is planning on giving away 100 bags filled with winter wear for those in need.

Lawson had to modify this year’s coat drive and instead will be distributing the bags locally. There will be no in-person event.

Distribution will take place at the Arcata Plaza, Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, the Betty Kwan Chinn Day Center and other local churches and homeless shelters.

Lawson spoke with homeless community members to find out what should be put in the bags.

“They don’t really have somewhere to live, so they have to travel light and travel with just basic things,” Lawson said.

Lawson encourages people who want to volunteer to reach out to the Justice for David Josiah Lawson Instagram and Facebook page.

“Help is always needed,” Lawson said. “It’s a community, we work together.”

For Lawson, the annual coat drive is meant to honor the memory of her son, David Josiah Lawson who died in 2017, as well as help less-fortunate members of the community.

“I sent my son off to college, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be having this conversation with you and doing a give back in honor of my son,” Lawson said. “Tomorrow is not promised so we should just love one another and help those who need our help.”
