La Máquina series: A story of success, crime and loyalty
“La Máquina” is an intense, powerful six-part series of friendship, loyalty and sacrifice that shows that boxing is much more than jabs and glory. Combining a glimpse into the sport of boxing, organized crime and complex friendship, Gael Garcia Bernal and his lifelong friend, Diego Luna give us an outstanding performance in this Hulu series.
Bernal and Luna have collaborated on screen since 2001 and recently reunited for their fifth project together, “La Máquina,” directed by Gabriel Ripstein.
The story follows Esteban, played by Bernal, a veteran boxer who is dedicated to get his last chance at success in the ring. At his side is his manager, and lifelong friend Andy, played by Luna, who supports Esteban unconditionally and does whatever it takes to bring him to fame even in the face of danger. They both struggle with personal obstacles throughout the show; Esteban feeling the pressure of his physical limitations that come with age and the mental toll it takes on him, and Andy facing the risks of his involvement with organized crime.
The most memorable scenes of the show are of Esteban in the ring, capturing the rawness and brutality of the sport. The series accurately reflects the emotion that can be felt in the ring, and the pain and sacrifice that is inherent to the sport of boxing. It shows us that boxing is not a glamorous sport, rather one that demands a lot and gives little in return, and that sometimes you pay for pursuing your dreams, especially as the body ages.
Esteban and Andy are so dedicated to winning that they do whatever it takes, legal or not, which leads them to involve themselves in the world of organized crime, risking their lives. Although Esteban has his doubts, he has confidence in his friend and their shared goal of success. The show demonstrates the necessity of friendship, loyalty, and the importance of having someone at your side.
The series isn’t perfect, however, it has received mixed reviews for its somewhat confusing narrative and its attempt to include too many plot lines in one mini-series. The crime scenes sometimes are a bit cliche and can be predictable, and some scenes feel unnecessary and out of place.
That being said, the dialogue and chemistry between Bernal and Luna are notable and their performances are a strong point for the show. “La Máquina” is a raw drama that offers a mix of boxing and crime, full of memorable moments and leaves the viewer wondering if all the sacrifice really was worth the success. Regardless of mixed reviews “La Máquina” is a series worth watching thanks to its powerful scenes and dialogue that captivate an audience.
