Tasty Hub: A commissary kitchen supporting budding businesses in Humboldt
Tasty Hub is a commissary kitchen that opened on July 11 at 1935 5th Street in Eureka, and has been supporting small businesses looking to get into the food industry. Tasty Hub’s owner, Gabrielle Long, is an experienced restaurant entrepreneur who also owns Taste of Bim and The Grind Cafe in Eureka.
Tasty Hub is flexible for people looking to use the space. Aspiring food business owners can choose to do yearly, monthly or one-time rentals based on their needs. Long was inspired to create this project, because she had been approached by many people seeking advice for getting into the food vending scene.
Buying a restaurant space is expensive and a large commitment, so Long began Tasty Hub as a way for these budding businesses to begin their journey with lower overhead costs and rub elbows with other vendors.
“As Humboldt grows and we want to encourage people to stay, as we get different multicultural foods and new concepts, there was a need for people to come together, yes to start a business𑁋but also network,” Long said.
One of the businesses currently using Tasty Hub’s kitchen is a food truck that opened four months ago named Happy Taco, owned by Ubaldo Garcia. As an owner of a new food truck business, Garcia found Tasty Hub to be a great opportunity to reach more customers.
“It’s a good place because it has all the services I need,” Garcia said. “We prepare our food inside and sell it outside, from there people can decide if they wish to eat inside.”
Happy Taco is currently open at Tasty Hub Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m to 7:00 p.m Their most popular menu items are their burritos that Garcia says are both tasty and nutritious.
“I wish to encourage them to try the meals, as we try to make our food healthy,” said Garcia.
Tasty Hub hosts a number of new restaurants and food trucks, but that is not all the kitchen is intended for. This new multi-purpose space is for community events and whatever their culinary needs might be.
“It could be anyone that sells food to the public, it’s also for private chefs, folks that cater weddings and want a licensed space,” Long said.
As a new business hosting interested food entrepreneurs among other uses, Long encourages people to come check out Tasty Hub and their array of vendors that use the space.
“Continue to come and support, and those that haven’t seen it yet, swing by,” Long said.
