On Jan. 26, the new Dreamer Center was added to the Balabanis House. Up the staircase to the left, you’ll find the office of Georgina Celda Salvarrey, who stepped into her new role as the Dreamer Center coordinator that same day.

The Dreamer Center will be a hub for students for financial aid, health, food and legal resources.

The Dreamer Center will act as an extension of other cultural resources on campus and provide additional aid for undocumented and mixed-status students.

“I’ve always leaned toward causes where people are needed to fight, so it was logical for me to apply to this job,” Salvarrey said.

Following the occupation of Nelson Hall East, protestors have officially cleared out the building.

As of 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 28, protest signs in front of Nelson Hall East have been cleared and at least four security guards are surrounding the outside of the building and SAC Quad. A security guard on the scene said the security is a third party company called AX9 Inc. brought in from the university. The security guards said they are working with UPD and were advised to notify them if protesters attempt to occupy a building. They were told to look for people who were not supposed to be on campus or are masked.

Today at 9:30 a.m., the university shared an update with El Leñador:

“At approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 28), 20 individuals occupying a meeting room in Nelson Hall East exited on their own, and the University was able to clear and secure the building. There were no arrests or injuries. Individuals were free to leave at any time, and following multiple dispersal warnings they vacated the building. The campus is open and operating as normal, though certain buildings remain locked. A number of the individuals who had occupied the meeting room have been identified, and the University will follow up using the appropriate campus and legal processes. We respect everyone’s First Amendment right to free expression–regardless of their viewpoints and backgrounds. We also support the rights of all students, staff, and faculty to a safe and respectful learning and working environment that is free from disruptions.”

Students for a Democratic Society Humboldt stated that protestors left the building due to police presence outside and police stated protestors would be arrested if they did not leave the building.

We are still gathering information and will provide updates.

As of 7:45p.m., about 30 protesters are still occupying the Goodwin Forum in Nelson Hall East and a tent is set up outside. Administration have locked all entrances to Nelson Hall, as well as the bathrooms inside the building.

During the Cal Poly Humboldt Foundation Finance & Investment Committee Zoom meeting at 1 p.m., it was announced that as of now, CPH has only fully divested from Brown Advisory Sustainable Growth Fund “due to long-term underperformance relative to its benchmark and peers,” according to the Finance & Investment Committee Meeting Certified Resolution. In its place, CPH has invested in Calvert U.S. Large Cap Growth Responsible Index Fund. CPH has yet to fully divest.

“It’s just proving that it’s not as hard as they were claiming it was in the meeting earlier today,” a protestor in Goodwin Forum said.

Around 2 p.m., Acting Vice President for Administration & Finance Mike Fisher and Vice President Chrissy Holliday held a short meeting with the protestors in Nelson Hall to discuss drafting a response to the protestor’s demands.

“Unlike this morning, he was much more willing to negotiate now than he was before,” a protester in Goodwin Forum said. “He’s now willing to give a written statement of the things he will do.”

Travis Fleming from Facilities Management stated that admin on the scene were attempting to stop outside protestors from delivering food and supplies to the door of Goodwin Forum.

The university shared a response to El Leñador via email at 1:30 p.m.

“This morning, University leadership had a conversation with concerned students and community members. After a sit-in on the quad, protestors moved into Nelson Hall East. The building is currently locked and entrance is not allowed. While the University fully supports the right of individuals to peacefully express their views, it is equally important that we maintain a disruption-free environment for all students, staff, and faculty to learn and work. The Free Speech Support & Resource Team and University leadership are actively engaged with the protestors involved to resolve the situation as quickly and peacefully as possible.”

This is a developing story.
